SAM adds another level of security to Dometic ProSafes, providing encrypted web-based remote emergency-opening capabilities, anti-tampering protection and audit reports for managers. Austin, Texas – June 15, 2015 – Dometic Group, the leading supplier of hospitality comfort products for hotels, resorts and cruise ships, today announced that it will be exhibiting Dometic Safe Management (SAM), a secure web-based technology for management of hotel guest safes, at this week’s HITEC show, the Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition & Conference. Dometic will be at Booth #757 from June 15-18 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. “SAM is an encrypted, web-based software that gives hotel managers unprecedented control and oversight over in-room Dometic ProSafes,” said Nuria Bergada, Product Manager Lodging Systems for Dometic Group. “SAM meets the highest level of risk and safety protocols established by a hotel’s management. It can quickly and securely handle the resolution of issues related to guests’ code management, and also provide audit reports for managers.”

SAM operates remotely, and can be accessed via any Wifi-connected portable device (IOS or Android). Because Dometic ProSafes electronically store data on the last 1,000 operations carried out on them, managers can generate detailed audit reports of all activities related to the unit, with exact date and time for each. It can be easily configured to allow access only to selected staff. Each staff member profile can be configured with different levels of access. SAM allows a hotel’s management to open any Dometic ProSafe remotely, without using a master overriding code. To open a safe for a guest, authorized staff members use SAM’s Remote Emergency Operating System (REOS) to generate a new alphanumeric code securely – just for the safe in question. The new four-digit code provided by SAM is usable only once, so the guest can start using his own code immediately after. All ProSafe models come with sensors that register any attempt to tamper with the unit, day or night, while blocking the unit for any further use.

In case of a tampering attempt, SAM will provide authorized staff with a code to release the safe back into normal operation. SAM is a standard feature on Dometic’s Premium ProSafe line, including models able to fit a 15-inch or 17-inch laptop. I’ve often noticed that many of the people I see commuting by bike are technical or business folks, working in IT or other white-collar positions. I, like many of them, have to carry a laptop to and from work. This usually brings up questions. On my personal blog, the question was asked again: “[Do you] just shove it in your panniers and pray?” On days I can get away with not toting it around, I will. If you just need to move data between home and work, you can usually get by with storing your data on removable media such as a USB Flash Drive. While that’s a good idea, many companies have policies against it, so you should check first. Assuming that you have no choice but to lug an expensive, fragile piece of equipment with you on a daily basis, there are plenty of things you can do to make sure your hardware makes the journey as safely as possible. Most of the time, I use panniers and I ride about 29 miles round trip. In the winter, I switch to a backpack and I ride to a nearby bus stop.

This reduces the bicycle part of my commute to less than 10 miles per day. The key to keeping your laptop safe is padding. I use a form-fitting laptop sleeve since it’s barely larger than the laptop itself and fits well in my pannier. You may also opt to pack your clothes around the laptop. Similarly, I use a laptop-specific backpack when I’m not using the panniers. My MacBook has made the journey to and from work almost every day this way for about two years. I have been reading a lot of about how using laptop on one's lap is not safe for health (skin disease, fertility etc.) I am in a situation where I need to be working from a living room sofa, and I need to use my laptop on my lap. Being bit book lover, I always have some big and thick book nearby. Old encyclopedias come in mind easily Its cheap (you already have at least one book at home, I assume) Fulfills the same as lap desk without investment Helps protect you from the heat and other notebook radiation (even if the effect on human body is bit questionable, still "feeling safe" counts here) Helps protect your laptop from overheating. If you had it on your lap, the air vents could be blocked by your body and/or cushions, which can overheat your computer. You can use a slim wooden cutting board, which is both cheap and very lightweight. I have been using that method for 4 years now and I've had no problems so far. My laptop isn't overheating plus the board is strong enough and doesn't bend. My laptop is 15.6 inches. I use a lap tray (may be called a cushioned lap tray or bean bag lap tray) of the sort designed for people to eat their meal on. It has a lip around the edge so the (in my case) netbook doesn't slip off, and the bean bag cushion means it moulds to my legs.
