Armstrong Vinyl Flooring Middle East

Terrazzo brings design flexibility not available in other flooring systems. Over the years, we’ve learned never to tell a designer or architect that “it can’t be done” with terrazzo. Every time we thought terrazzo had design limitations, we were proven wrong. An unlimited color range coupled with a plethora of aggregate options from mother of pearl, to marble, to recycled glass; these are among the many advantages offered by terrazzo. Whether you’re looking for a modern monochromatic look, or an artistic piece reminiscent of classic italian mosaics, or detailed artistic work with a photographic quality, terrazzo is your canvas. In terms of green technology, there are no surfaces that compare with terrazzo. Possessing a compressive strength of nearly 500 pounds per square inch, some of the earliest terrazzo-like floors created almost 10,000 years ago still exist in the middle east today. Ancient terrazzo is remarkably analogous to modern cementitious terrazzo, almost to the point of indistinguishability.

The fact that these floors are still serviceable and beautiful after many centuries is clear confirmation of the superior sustainability of terrazzo.
With modern technology and the advent of epoxy terrazzo, modern terrazzo floors are even more sustainable and durable than cement terrazzo floors. Epoxy terrazzo also provides the option to incorporate post-consumer and pre-consumer recycled content such as glass and stone into the materials of these timeless terrazzo floors. For more information, please visit our Going Green with Terrazzo page. Master Terrazzo’s Morricite system meets the most stringent of environmental standards, even the indoor air quality emission requirements for the State of California EPA, section 01350. This non-porous system does not support microbial growth and does not allow accumulation of moisture, absorbing water at a rate 1/10th that of cementitious terrazzo which results in an abnormally high stain resistance of the overall system. Additionally, this lack of water absorption and porosity results in a surface requiring only minimal cleaning processes, without the need for use of harsh cleaning chemicals.

Ancient terrazzo floors created centuries ago still stand in many buildings throughout Europe, the middle east and far east. Epoxy terrazzo floors are even more durable and can often be expected to outlast the life of the building in which they are installed. Given the non-porous nature of epoxy terrazzo, only minimal cleaning is required. Unlike carpet, vinyl flooring or tile, a terrazzo floor will almost certainly never need replacement, even when located in high-traffic areas. There are no grout joints to allow for dirt accumulation. The low maintenance requirements, non-porous nature of the surface and crack-resistance built into the technology used to install Master Terrazzo Technologies floors creates a near-permanent solution that pays for itself over time. It qualifies for many green building schemes including LEED v4, BREEAM, and CHPS. FloorScore was developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) with SCS, and SCS is the exclusive certification body for the FloorScore program.

The FloorScore program assures you the most cost-effective indoor air quality certification available today. Our independent, ISO-17025 accredited laboratories are located strategically around the world. By testing representative product samples and focusing strictly on the relevant chemicals of concern, we deliver the results you need without needlessly driving up costs. Complete and submit an SCS Application Form. From this, SCS scopes the project and prepares a proposal and work order with a timeline and quote. Upon your approval and signing of the work order, an SCS account manager is assigned to guide you through the certification process. An SCS auditor reviews product data, corporate documentation, the manufacturing process, product formulation, and test data, and assesses your readiness for an onsite audit. Once sufficient data are collected, the onsite audit is scheduled. The auditor conducts an onsite audit, observing your operation and interacting with your technical staff to obtain any additional information needed to reach an accurate, supportable evaluation.

A product is submitted to an SCS-approved lab for testing to the California 01350 standard. The SCS auditor issues a Non-Conformance Report for any non-conformities observed. You respond with corrective actions, and may also comment and responses to the information contained in the report and auditor’s conclusions. The SCS auditor prepares a Draft Assessment Report detailing the audit findings, including data analysis, non-conformities, and opportunities for improvement. An SCS reviewer conducts a final review of the Draft Assessment Report and makes the certification decision. If certification is granted, SCS issues to your company the certificate and final report. Once certified, your company is listed in SCS Green Products Guide, and you are granted the right to use the approved FloorScore® label, consistent with SCS guidelines. Certification Maintenance and Renewal Annual desk reviews of the quality system and product performance are required under the standard and are conducted to maintain your certification and support continual improvement.

Any renewal testing required will be confirmed by the auditor during the evaluation process consistent with the FloorScore standard. What does it take to get certified? Flooring products must undergo the evaluation process, which includes a review of the product’s formulation and the manufacturing site’s document control system, an onsite audit, and product emissions testing. What VOCs are tested for the FloorScore emission test? FloorScore tests for 35 individual Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) specified by the California Standard Method for VOC Emissions Testing and Evaluation (Standard Method V1.1), otherwise known as CA Section 01350. What are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)? The US EPA defines VOCs as “any compound of carbon, excluding carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metallic carbides or carbonates, and ammonium carbonate, which participates in atmospheric photochemical reactions." VOC gases are emitted from certain solids or liquids, and include a variety of organic chemicals, some of which may have short-term and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.

Do you test for phthalates? The FloorScore standard is a VOC emission based standard for indoor air quality and does not include phthalates within its scope because it is not considered an emission source when manufactured in products like vinyl flooring. Primary exposure concerns for phthalates occur through ingestion, such as with toys or plastic bottles. Manufacturers may choose to have products tested for phthalate content at a qualified lab. Testing requirements typically follow the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Test Method to Determine Phthalate Content. Resources available for further information on Phthalates can be found here: Can SCS tell me a product’s VOC emissions profile that I plan to purchase? While SCS has access to the emissions results for products it certifies, it is not allowed to disclose a client’s data. For specific emissions data requests, you may contact the manufacturer directly. Where can I find FloorScore products?

The SCS Green Products Guide has a complete and searchable list of all FloorScore certified products. How much does FloorScore certification cost? Yes, SCS will work with the distributors and the FloorScore certified manufacturers to undergo private label certification. Please contact an account executive to begin the private label certification process. I use an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to manufacture my products. Can I still qualify for FloorScore certification? Yes, you may either encourage your manufacturer to become FloorScore certified and then apply for a private label certification based on the OEM’s certificate, or you may pursue certification independently and use the OEM as your product manufacturing site.

Does SCS provide certification support? SCS provides on-going program support, including staff assistance, marketing and promotional support, and information about new or revised requirements. Certified clients will receive information about the logo approval system and use of SCS trademarks for both on-product and off-product promotions.
