OurNissan 370Z will be stored in a heated garage. Any thoughts on getting the vehicle ready for not being operated for three to four months? A: We need more space than the regular Motormouth column to answer this one. It is a frequent question from the snowbirds. However, there are also plenty of people who stay put but store their summertime toys over the winter. Of course, the following also applies to those who leave a vehicle behind and head north for the summer. Dirty oil, especially if it contains any water, can lead to internal damage from the acids that tend to form.
If you prefer to do this yourself, warm the engine before removing the drain plug from the oil pan. This gets as much old oil out as possible. Don't forget to change the oil filter. Leaving it on is like taking a shower with your socks on. Consider adding an oil stabilizer. After filling it with fresh oil, start the engine and check for leaks. Although many shops offer a free quickie inspection during the oil change, few seem to go the extra mile of lubricating the door, trunk and hood hinges. If they don't, you should. While you are at it, put some lubricant in the door and trunk (or hatch) locks to help prevent them from freezing. If your coolant is due to be changed, do it now. Modern long-life antifreeze/coolant has lulled many motorists into neglecting this necessary task. Although some owners like to do this themselves, a professional technician with a flushing and filling machine can do a more thorough job of getting all of the old coolant out. Ethylene glycol is the base for most antifreeze.
It does not wear out, but the additives do. Many shops have on-site recycling equipment that extracts spent additives and contaminants, then installs new additives that raise and stabilize pH, inhibit rust and corrosion, and reduce scaling.Coat the door, trunk and hood gaskets with a thin coat of silicone grease or spray silicone oil. Do not forget the sunroof gasket. Avoid overspray if you chose the aerosol; you may choose to spray it onto a rag and then wipe the components. The silicone helps to preserve the rubber.Wash and wax your car. Be sure you get the underside of the vehicle cleaned. Stuff clinging to the car acts like a sponge to trap moisture that can lead to rust. A good coat of wax preserves the finish. Parasitic electrical drains from the engine control computer, climate control computer, infotainment center, CAN bus, and clock can drain the battery during storage. Do not disconnect the battery. Doing so could erase computers' memories. Some systems may not work when you reconnect the battery.
Even the power windows may need to be reinitialized!Maintaining the battery's charge makes more sense here. Choose a smart charger. Once the battery is fully charged, a smart charger (or battery maintainer), cycles on and off, allowing the battery to discharge slightly, then bringing it back to full charge. Dumb trickle chargers can overcharge and damage the battery.Moisture may collect in the muffler and exhaust system, especially if you don't fully warm the car to cook the moisture out of the exhaust system. This typically happens if you start your car periodically during storage. If your muffler does not already have a weep hole, make one in the lowest spot using a 1/8-inch drill. Even though the exhaust system may be stainless steel, it won't last forever. To keep vermin out of the engine compartment, generously spray the engine compartment with a rodent repellent. The jury is still out on whether mothballs or toilet deodorant tablets keep critters away. Although some people suggest poisons like D-Con, we think the risk (and the odor) of finding a dead animal would be unpleasant.
Stuff some steel wool in the tailpipe and air cleaner intake to prevent animals from entering and setting up house.Inside the car, clean and treat leather to keep it supple. Treat any vinyl surfaces for the same reason as well as to reduce out-gassing — the evaporation of certain polymers that keep it supple (and make the windshield smeary). Leave the windows open just a crack to allow air circulation, but not so much than any animals can get in.We have heard that some people hang a light bulb inside the car to keep it dry, but we feel this is a dangerous practice. We prefer silica gel to absorb moisture, which could lead to mold or mildew. To keep the interior from smelling musty, place some trays of activated charcoal in the footwells. To keep the wiper blade edges from being deformed, lift the wiper arms just enough to place small wood blocks under them. If your wipers can lock in the upright position, you may choose to do that, but it makes it hard to cover the car.If you want to cover your vehicle, do not use one of those cheap blue plastic tarps from the home center store.
