Sun, 23 Nov 2014 21:22:33 +0000Sun, 22 Apr 2012 03:24:50 +0000After more than two decades as a marquee performer at the Red Fox Lounge, Lorna Lambey knows the perfect song to close the final show at the beloved Winter Park watering hole."The Curtain Falls," a wistful ballad made famous by crooner Bobby Darin in the early 1960s, reminisces about how "cheers and laughter will linger after they've torn down these dusty walls." It's a fitting sentiment for the staff, musicians and patrons of the Red Fox, a landmark social institution that will close on Nov. 1 after more than 50 years in the Best Western Mount Vernon Inn at U.S. Highway 17-92 and Morse Boulevard."It's going to be emotional for a lot of people, not just me," said Lambey, who has performed kitschy pop standards in the bar for 23 years. "I think it's going to require some discipline to get through it." The hotel — open since 1949 — has been sold to Orlando developer Chuck Whittall, president of Unicorp National Developments Inc.

He hopes to tear down the 65-year-old inn and replace it with a shopping and apartment project called The Luxe. The transition will be a difficult one for employees and loyal fans, who consider themselves part of a family. "I grew up here, mowing the lawn, washing dishes and working around the property," said owner Rick Frazee, who inherited the inn after his parents died seven years ago. "I've worked as general manager since about 1971." Much of that time, the place stayed busy with weekday business travelers and bookings by civic groups and wedding parties on the weekends.Business slipped last year, however, after word leaked of the pending sale. The developer made Frazee an offer that was hard to refuse."A lot of our contacts wanted to find other places. Then the Alfond Inn [in Winter Park, near Rollins College] opened — and the two things have hurt the business," Frazee said. "People weren't sure they could book things and find us here." Frazee plans to auction a distinctive wood carving of the bar's namesake, a fixture behind the bar, to benefit Ronald McDonald House.

Attired in a bow tie and spectacles, the carving is a fitting addition to decor that includes paintings of fox hunts. The room hasn't changed much through the years."It's a very nice wood carving that one of my early bar patrons did at my request about 20 years ago," he said. "We've had a lot of people want to buy that fox. I've heard a lot of people talk about how they might like to steal the fox. I'm trying to get the word out that it belongs to a charity, so please don't steal the fox."Frazee, 66, expects a mob scene on Friday and Saturday for the last weekend at the Red Fox, when Lambey and pianist Michael Moore will provide the soundtrack for the final hours.The closing moments will be especially emotional for Lambey, who spent much of her career in the room as part of a duo with her husband, Mark Wayne. He died at age 82 in 2012, the morning after yet another rousing Red Fox performance. According to urban legend, Mark & Lorna's act was inspiration for the comic lounge act created in the 1990s by Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer for NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

Mark & Lorna's act also became a favorite of younger stars of Orlando's indie music scene. It's not a sterile environment like a lot of the new shiny, chrome places," Lambey said. "It's very warm, relaxing and very close. On most nights when I'm working there, I can just about name everybody in the room. Not only do I know their name, but I know the songs they like and all about their children and grandchildren."There's talk among the bar staff about starting a new family vibe at Rocco's Italian Grille & Bar, a few miles south on 17-92, but it could never match the original."I'll be across the street, crying like a baby when the wrecking ball hits it," said Nancy Caron, 71, a Red Fox bartender for 28 years.
