Finally, in a burst of productivity earlier this week, I decided to dive in and get the thing done — and, of course, once I got going and saw how easy it really was, I could have kicked myself for not doing it sooner. Miraculously, my sheets ended up being the exact width of my duvet, with an extra half-inch hem all the way around — perfect for my seam allowance. I just needed to trim and hem the length on both sheets, then pin the wrong sides together and stitch around three sides of the rectangle. And it almost went that smoothly, except for the part where I forgot the number one rule in sewing: Measure twice, cut once. Yeah: I forgot to take that preexisting hem into account when cutting the length on one sheet, so it ended up being about a half-inch shorter than the other. It wasn’t a deal breaker, though — and with thoughts of Tim Gunn telling me to Make It Work, I plowed ahead anyway. Yes, it’s a little uneven at the bottom…but I just flip the short side over on the bed and no one’s the wiser.

I also took a hint from Martha Stewart and sewed some twill tape inside the upper corners of my cover, and on the duvet itself, so that I could tie the duvet securely in place inside the cover. Eventually I’ll put some buttonholes or ties along the bottom edge to close that off, too, but for now, my little ties are working like a charm to hold everything secure. Long story short: I definitely recommend this method if you’re looking for a quick and inexpensive project that will give you a major return on investment. I’m only sorry I don’t have a full-length shot of the finished product to share with you (my room is a little small for accurate picture-taking), but just picture a lovely grey cloud pillowing over the bed… I swear I slept better last night under that thing than I did before — even if I do have to pack it away for the season in the next couple of weeks.
