This year we’ve changed the feedback period used in the ranking to 12 months, to even out seasonal differences and to match The World’s Top Amazon Marketplace Sellers list. For this post I’ve pulled together a big list – a very big list – of the top 1,000 eBay sellers worldwide. If you want to get straight to the data, here’s a jump down to the full list.
An extract of the top ten is right here. You can see much more data in the full list. What makes these sellers the “top” sellers? Well, they have gained the most positive feedback in the last 12 months, and they are all Premium Store owners (or the international equivalent such as Featured Shops in the UK). Feedback volume is a useful approximation to selling volume. Below, I’ve drawn some insights from the data. I’d love to hear your own observations in the comments at the end. 38% of the top 1,000 eBay sellers are serious cross-border traders – they are based in one country, and have a Premium (or Featured) eBay Store in another. That was 31% in 2014, and 35% in 2015, so the trend is consistent. Of those international eBay traders, 85% are based in China or Hong Kong – 320 sellers in total, up from 281 in 2014 and 315 in 2015. In our 2015 list, the increase in Chinese exporters accounted for most of the overall increase in cross-border trade. This year it’s a different story.
Chinese businesses made up 89% of cross-border sellers last year, so although their total number has increased (by 5 sellers), businesses from other parts of the world account for more of the total growth in international selling (17 sellers).Auto Repair Business For Sale Edmonton 48% of all cross-border traders are Chinese sellers exporting direct to the US, which is actually a decrease from 51% last year. Micro Tiny Puppies For SaleBut still, 18% of all the top 1,000 eBay sellers are based in China with eBay Stores in the USA. Cheap Wedding Chair Hire PerthThat’s the same as in 2014 and 2015. A further 139 sellers are based in China or Hong Kong and export to other countries in the West. That’s up from 102 in 2014 and 135 in 2015.
So Chinese exporting continues to grow, but at a slower rate. In 2015, most of the increase in cross-border trade was due to businesses from China and Hong Kong selling to countries other than the US, particularly the UK where the increase was from 33 to 59 sellers – matching a decrease in UK-based sellers on the list last year. This year the number of Chinese businesses selling to the UK has actually decreased by 6, while Chinese sellers to Australia have increased by 4 and Chinese sellers to mainland Europe have increased over 50% to 23. In summary, 32% of the top 1,000 eBay sellers are Chinese traders selling to the US, Europe and Australia – up from 25% in 2014 and 30% in 2015. The number of Chinese sellers to the US is about the same, while Chinese sellers to other countries have increased by 3%. International sellers from other parts of the world have increased a massive 43%, but from a lower starting point of only 40 sellers last year. Australia remains an interesting case.
It has a third of the population of the UK, but around 20% more of the top Chinese eBay sellers have stores in Australia as in the UK. It was a different story in 2014, when there were only 33 China-to-UK sellers on the list, and in 2015 when there was exactly the same number selling to the UK and Australia. This year Chinese sellers are a little less successful in the UK, but have returned to form in Australia. Proximity is sure to play a part in that – China is a lot closer to Australia than the UK. And eBay is generally doing very well in Australia, not least because Amazon are still not selling physical goods there, only Kindle books. Cross-border trade is not quite completely dominated by China. Three Malaysian exporters feature in the top 100, along with Belgian philatelist matthijs_philatelie at #45, Canadian seller primechoiceautoparts at #69 and Dutch seller vidaxl_de at #72 Of course, these are not the only international sellers, just those with Premium/Featured eBay Stores outside their home country – they primarily sell overseas, it appears.
Huge numbers of eBay sellers trade across borders, but most still make the majority of their sales in their home country. These are the countries with the most sellers in the top 1,000. 1 – The sum of feedback (in thousands) received in the last twelve months The UK now has the top two eBay sellers worldwide (Babz Media, previously at #2, went out of business last year) but China has extended the lead it established last year for the most sellers on the list overall. In 2014, the UK topped the list with 292 sellers, while China was in second place with 250. China took the top spot in 2015, increasing its count to 291 while the UK dropped back to 245. The US is in the third spot, after the UK and China, for total sellers in the top 1,000. But the number of US eBay sellers has fallen quite sharply – from 221 sellers in 2015, to 197 sellers this year. Southeast Asian countries are showing the biggest changes. Thailand has leaped into the top ten with 10 sellers, up from only two in 2015.
Malaysia now has nine sellers on the list, up from four last year. But Hong Kong bucks the trend, with only 15 sellers on the list this year – down from 24 in 2015. There’s very little change in the seller counts for Germany, Australia, Singapore and Italy. These are the categories which the top 1,000 sellers list products in the most. eBay is best known now for consumer goods, so it’s not surprising to see phone accessories, clothing, home wares and jewelry featuring in the top five. It’s more unexpected that 5% of high-volume sellers target the Business & Industrial category, with 48 sellers in the top 1,000. Clothing, Shoes & Accessories grew dramatically from 138 sellers in 2014 to 182 in 2015, but has now fallen back a little to 175. Phones & Accessories sellers decreased from 173 in 2014 to 135 in 2015 and now only 110 sellers. But Home & Garden is the big gainer each year, growing from 132 sellers in 2014 to 148 sellers in 2015 and now topping the list with 185 sellers.
Jewelry & Watches has fallen from 100 to 76 sellers, and Computers has fallen from 59 to 46 sellers. Sporting Goods and Health & Beauty have grown by 10 sellers and 9 sellers respectively. There are also strong showings from eBay’s past as a venue for hobbyists and collectors: Crafts are targeted by 31 sellers and Collectibles by 17. Even the specialist Coins & Paper Money category still has six of the top 1,000 sellers. This year we can’t determine the main category for 13 sellers on the list – because they currently have no items for sale. This could indicate an increase in the number of high-volume eBay sellers going bust, but will also be from our change to ranking sellers based on their 12-month feedback (instead of six months). Babz are a prominent example, still on the list at #73 due to their 12-month feedback of 162,000 (now quickly decreasing) but with zero feedback in the last six months. 1 – Sellers without an indicator were not in the 2015 list. Hover over the indicator to see the 2015 position.
2 – Category names have been standardized to allow comparison. 3 – Shows each sellers’ category with the most listings. 4 – Total feedback received. This is shown instead of the better known Feedback Score, which can be an inaccurate indicator of sales volume. I’d like to tip my virtual hat to those who have published top seller lists in the past. I was inspired by these resources to produce an up-to-date version, and they remain valuable for those who want a glimpse into the past. Web Retailer commissioned research to collect this data in February 2014, May 2015 and July 2016 from eBay’s websites in Australia, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, the UK and the US. Sellers with Premium Stores in the US (Featured Shops in the UK) Anchor Stores/Shops, and equivalents on other eBay sites are included. It’s possible that some high-volume sellers are not included, if they were omitted from the eBay store directory at the time of the research.
