Keep your ceiling fan lights burning. When your ceiling fan lights quit working, the answer to why they quit isn’t always as straightforward as a burned-out light bulb. The heat generated by electricity can expand and contract electrical wires. This can cause loose wire connections anywhere from the wall switch to the light kit. Damaged light sockets and a broken pull chain switch can also cause the fan’s lights to stop working. Checking a few connections and making a couple of repairs can get your ceiling fan lights working once again. Flip off the circuit breaker to the ceiling fan’s electrical circuit. Remove the light bulb from the ceiling fan light socket. Check the bulb for broken filaments. Hold a noncontact voltage tester inside the light socket. The voltage tester lights up if power is detected. Insert a light bulb socket cleaning brush into the ceiling fan light socket to clean any corrosion from the sides of the socket. Wipe the inside of the socket with a soft cloth. Insert a small, slotted screwdriver beneath the metal tab inside the socket.

Pry the tab up slightly. Replace the light bulb into the ceiling fan light socket. Turn the circuit breaker back on to power the ceiling fan. Turn on the switch leading to the ceiling fan light if you have two switches that control the light and fan separately. Hold a noncontact voltage tester against the light switch. Turn off the breaker supplying electricity to the ceiling fan at you main electrical panel if the tester does not light. Remove the screws holding the switch cover plate over the ceiling fan and light switches. Remove the screw at the top of the ceiling fan light switch and the bottom of the switch. Carefully pull the switch from the box in the wall. Look for two black wires attached to the side of the light switch. Ensure these wires are secured beneath the screws on the side of the switch. Replace the black wire beneath the screw if it has come loose. Tighten the switch screws on the side of the switch. Trace the black wires attached to the ceiling fan light switch back into the electrical box.

Look for wire connectors that could connect the black wires from the switch to another black wire. Twist the connector to tighten it, ensuring the wires are connected. Replace the switch in the electrical box. Replace the cover over the switches. Turn on the breaker to the ceiling fan. Remove the screws from the canopy at the top of the ceiling fan. Twist each on clockwise to ensure they are tight. Turn off the ceiling fan circuit breaker. Remove the screws holding the ceiling fan light kit to the ceiling fan. The screws are located along the bottom edge of the switch housing directly beneath the fan blades. Lower the light kit from the housing. Check the wire connections inside the housing. Tighten any loose connections and replace the light kit. Flip the breaker back on to the ceiling fan. Turn off the ceiling fan circuit breaker inside the breaker panel. Remove the screws holding the light kit to the ceiling fan. Pull the kit from the switch housing to access the wire connectors. Untwist the connectors from the two wires connecting the light kit to the ceiling fan. Pull the wires apart to release the light kit and move it to your work surface. Look for the two black wires running from the pull chain light switch. One wire connects to the ceiling fan, while the other connects to the light socket. Untwist the connector holding the remaining switch wire to the ceiling fan light socket.

Untwist the nut holding the pull chain switch to the light kit. The chain from the switch threads through the nut, and the nut is located on the outside of the light kit. Pull the old switch from the kit and insert a replacement pull chain switch into the kit. Secure the new switch to the light kit with the nut you removed from the original. Match one of the black wires from the switch to the wire from the socket. Connect to two wires with the wire connector you removed from the original pull chain light switch. Install the light kit back onto the ceiling fan by reversing the steps used to remove it.
