We love the car. While our LEAF has been an excellent car with great value, quality and performance, it’s not perfect. I could go on about the LEAF’s incredibly smooth and quiet ride, its innovative high-tech features, or how surprisingly practical it is—but it would be more helpful to take a cold hard look at its shortcomings.
While none of these irritants are fatal, in fact some would say they are trivial; they just go to show how high a bar has been set for 21st century EVs. The LEAF, as configured for the US market, comes with one of the wimpiest horns I have ever heard. It would not even pass muster in a clown car. One of the first things I did to my LEAF was to replace the horns with more substantial (read: LOUD) horns. It was a 10-minute task, and has turned out to be one of the most popular modifications that LEAF owners do to their cars. The instrumentation for the LEAF comes with a gauge that estimates the amount of range in miles available to the car based on the charge of its battery. The software behind this number is either wildly pessimistic or wildly optimistic, but it rarely does a good job of providing an accurate estimate, hence the name: The “Guess-O-Meter.” Nissan is working on a fix, but it can’t come quickly enough. This combination information, radio, navigation, telephone, media input system is overwhelmed with its assignment.
This system is easily one to two generations behind comparable systems in other cars, and is a real pain to operate. For example, to adjust the voice control for making a phone call requires four to six discrete commands, complete with verification from the system. With other systems, you can just say “call my wife at home,” and it will do just that. The screen display for navigation is hard to see, and the tiny control buttons on the steering wheel are laid out in an illogical manner and are hard to use. This system was apparently a parts-bin compromise, in which there is a big opportunity for improvement from Nissan. At first glance, the door on the glove box makes it look huge. But open it up and the useable space is oddly shaped. Nothing, including the owners manuals, fit swithout sliding out when the door is opened. Plus, the storage space is hard plastic, so things rattle and slide around in it. The glove box is a real irritant. There is a real ergonomic disconnect with the position of the armrests in the LEAF.
They are way too low for anyone over 5 feet tall, so you just can’t use them. In addition, the armrests act as the grab-handle for the door and they are covered with a light colored suede-like materiel that is a magnet for dirt and grime. The hatch space needs a liner or a better way to contain spills. There is nothing but a flimsy piece of carpet glued to cardboard in the trunk, and anything that spills back there immediately spreads out and under the plastic trim pieces. I discovered this problem the hard way—when a crockpot full of borscht sloshed around back there, despite my most careful driving efforts. I had to spend an afternoon disassembling the trim pieces in the trunk area to clean it out. A simple plastic liner, which is available on other Nissan models would solve the problem. My wife and I are constantly fighting about the driver’s seat and steering wheel position. She likes the wheel down low, the seat bottom up high, and up close to the dash. Unfortunately that makes it impossible for me to get in the car.
I have to lower the seat and move the steering wheel up before I can even get into the seat. Why not add a memory seat trim to the SL model? I would gladly pay more for just that option. The LEAF’s upholstery is made out of recycled pop bottles, and is a very light beige color. While the light color might make the cabin cooler, it also attracts dirt, grime, dog hair, and just about every other form of detritus known to man. The synthetic cloth is relatively easy to clean, but you have to spend an inordinate amount of time keeping it clean. This problem leads many LEAF owners to add seat covers. Better colors and materials are a major necessity for the LEAF (and have been promised by Nissan for the 2013 model). The LEAF takes major advantage of regenerative braking, but at low speeds, the braking on the car can be touchy and grabby. It takes a very light foot on the brake to do smooth stops from slow speeds on the LEAF. Recalibration of the regenerative braking software is probably in order to fix this annoyance.
