A 23-year-old athletics coach has been arrested on suspicion of lewd acts and child annoying, in a case stemming from separate alleged incidents involving two 13-year-old girls, the Oxnard Police Department announced Tuesday. William Esau Matau, 23, was being held on $60,000 bail at the Ventura County Main Jail after being taken into custody Monday, according to a statement from the Police Department. Detectives from the agency’s Family Protection Unit launched an investigation that morning after a 13-year-old girl said she was had been inappropriately touched by her volleyball coach at Curren Elementary School in Oxnard, the news release said. The suspect was identified as Matau, an employee of the city’s Recreational and Community Services Department, police said. The Oxnard Elementary School District contracts with the city to provide after-school programs at campuses throughout the city. According to the statement, Matau coached sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls in volleyball, basketball and soccer at Curren Elementary.
During the investigation, detectives learned of a second 13-year-old girl who “was having inappropriate conversations with Matau by text messaging and video messaging,” the news release said.
