Car Seat Cover DublinI tried doing this in the washing machine, but since this was commercially dyed it held tight to its color, barely losing any in the machine, so I knew I needed to bring on the heat.

I took things to the stove top, where I tested out the process on the pillow shams. I added one full packet of color remover to a large pot of water and added the two standard sized shams. They started losing color after about 30 minutes and had it thoroughly removed in 90 minutes. You can see the stitching kept most of its color (Rit doesn't work on polyester, which is what most thread is made from) but I had a feeling you'd barely be able to see this once it was dyed (and I was right!).Now that my shams were white, I needed to take on the duvet!As it was too big to fit in my soup pot, we went X-treme and did it in an 80 quart professional pot on Rebecca's grill. That's right, we do not take dyeing lightly at Rit! For the less extreme dyer, a huge bucket or container from Home Depot filled with very hot water that's refreshed regularly should do the trick. I used 3-4 packets of color remover given the size of the duvet.With my duvet and shams white, it was time to dye them! I washed them to ensure all the color remover was gone and then dyed them in the washing machine following the instructions for a front loading machine (see techniques).

I chose the color Harvest, which is a new Rit color available this April. You can also make it by mixing 1/2 cup Rit liquid Tangerine and 1 Tbsp Rit liquid Cocoa Brown for a washing machine sized load. Given the amount of fabric, I tripled the amount of dye so used 3 bottles Harvest or 1 1/2 cups Tangerine and 3 Tbsp Cocoa Brown. Mix the colors well and test with a small scrap of fabric or a paper towel before adding them to the machine.The color came out slightly uneven in one or two places when I first removed it from the machine (this can happen when the fabric tangles in the wash), but I had a feeling it would wash out to an even color when rinsed and that's exactly what happened when I washed it immediately after dyeing. I could not be more thrilled with the new color and am excited to curl up with my "new" duvet this winter! Our most classic design. There isn't a bedroom in creation that wouldn't look smart with these sheets. Shabby, grand, conservative, earthy-they're perfect matches all.
