A single-handle disk faucet is made with a pair of ceramic or plastic disks encased in a cylinder. The upper disk rotates when you turn the handle. Water flows when the inlets of the upper and lower disks line up. If water wells up around the handle or drips out of the spout, replace the seals with exact duplicates. If that does not solve the problem, replace the entire cylinder -- you cannot open it to replace disks. If water flow is slow or erratic, particles of rust and minerals may be clogging the inlets. Cleaning them solves the problem. Turn the faucet on until the water stops running. To remove the handle you'll probably need to unscrew a setscrew using a hex wrench or small screwdriver.

Lift off the handle and remove the dome housing. Pull out the cylinder that contains the disks and take it to a home center or hardware store to find replacement parts. The O-rings can be pried out of the cylinder using your fingers. On some models removing the bottom plate reveals the rubber seals. Remove them with a small screwdriver, taking care not to nick the plastic housing. If the cylinder is cracked or scored, replace it. Otherwise buy a kit with the rubber seals and O-rings. Before replacing the rubber parts, gently clean away scum and debris from the seats using a toothbrush or a nonmetallic abrasive pad. 1. Remove the two screws holding the trip lever plate to the tub wall. Put screws in safe place, so they don't fall down the drain. 2. Grasp the trip lever plate and carefully pull out the brass waste-and-overflow linkage. 3. Loosen the locknut and rotate the plastic fitting to lengthen the linkage about 1/4 inch.

6. Tighten the locknut and slip the brass plunger and linkage back down the overflow hole. 7. Replace the screws in the overflow plate, and flip up the trip lever. 8. Fill the tub with a little water, shut the faucet, then check to see if the water stays in the tub. If it drains out, remove the overflow plate, lengthen the linkage a little bit more and reinstall it. 9. Lift up on the trip lever, add some water to the tub and check once again to see if the tub stopper is properly adjusted. Repeat this process as many times as necessary to obtain a watertight seal.
