They'll thank you for it when they're older.Obviously don’t forget a hot nursing bra to go underneath. Von Follies by Dita Von Teese pictured above, available at Destination Maternity and other retailers. I’m a young mom who is nursing my gorgeous three-month-old. I’m blessed to have several weddings (and holiday parties!) in my future, but I am feeling overwhelmed about finding things to wear (for me, not the baby who looks awesome in everything, obviously). It isn’t hard enough that I am trying to navigate a totally different body type than I had previously, but I also need to be able to feed the baby in said outfit. I heard from another mom who wound up naked, on the toilet, in the bathroom stall holding a screaming hungry baby (this is basically my new nightmare). I would love a gorgeous shirt/skirt combo or a dress that has a zipper or buttons in the front but finding something dressy and cute is a real challenge. I know this isn’t strictly a wedding fashion issue, but from the other moms I’ve met it is definitely something that’s on your mind when you get an invite because everyone wants to look like the best version of themselves at a wedding.
Wow, you weren’t lying. Stylish nursing attire is probably the most destitute clothing category I’ve explored yet. (And nursing-friendly party dresses are basically… not a thing?) Everything I found that was specifically intended for nursing was very obviously designed for immediately after giving birth. There was next to nothing for moms who are still nursing their babies six months or a year later, when bodies are more settled into their new forms, but aren’t exactly sporting a bump anymore. I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t even have kids yet and I’m frustrated for you. Since I don’t have any pregnancy experience myself, I consulted Meg for best practices about how to dress a post-partum body, and it turns out a lot of the criteria isn’t too far off what I look for in my own party attire: low necklines, a little bit of stretch (or a lot of stretch—I won’t complain about too much of a good thing), and ideally nothing that would turn into an immediate disaster if you happen to leak a little.
(I never met a liquid I didn’t immediately spill on myself. It’s basically the same, right?) The good news is that there’s a ton of knockout cocktail dresses out there that fit the bill, no bathroom stall needed. And since I hate the idea of buying an expensive dress you’re only going to wear once, most of these can transition easily from holiday party into wedding season and are cut in a way that will still be flattering as your body continues to adjust to its new normal. As a general bit of advice, I’d try and give yourself as much time to try these out before you need them for an event. I’d probably buy two or three of your favorites, with the intention of sending two back, and then try them on at home, see how comfortable you are in them, and how easily you can nurse as needed. The worst thing you can do to yourself is wait until the last minute, only to find that the dress you loved isn’t as comfortable to nurse in as you were hoping for, and then ending up naked in the bathroom anyway.
This Kimono dress from Asos is my hands down favorite. While it’s not stretchy, the blousy top has just enough give that you can easily pull the top to one side for nursing. Plus, sequins mask all kinds of sins, including a little leakage. This black maxi dress is sexy as hell, and is probably more comfortable than most of my pajamas. Since the style is super versatile, you could easily change the look of this dress with accessories and wear it to every major function you have next year without anyone ever noticing (statement necklace for weddings, killer shoes for holiday party, statement belt just because). If you want something a little more formal, this dress is a nearly identical style, but with a bit more sophisticated (if not less stretchy) fabric. This illusion neckline number was the only nursing-specific dress I found that wasn’t totally useless (thanks Aussies!) It features a vertical opening in the front that you can access for breastfeeding, but from the looks of this photo, you’d never know!
Since you mentioned this dress would need to take you from holiday party to weddings, I wanted to include some items in here that felt a little less wintery. With the right shoes and accessories, this patchwork wrap front kimono dress could easily transition from office holiday party (these tights, with these boots) to summer wedding (no tights, these sandals). Okay, bear with me on this one, because the styling is… not great in this picture (unless your holiday party or wedding is in da club). With the right layering, this metallic minidress will go to work for you. I’d pair it with opaque black tights, basic black booties, and a cape blazer. (Note: Because this dress is more drapey than stretchy, you may have to pull your shoulder strap down to feed, so be aware that this dress might require either less modesty or a coverup, pending your personal feeding preferences. If you have your heart set on a skirt and top combo, here’s my recommendation: find a super fancy skirt (like the sequin swing skirt pictured above) and pair it with a very basic, very stretchy t-shirt tucked in at the waist.
My current favorite is the $10 “favorite” t-shirt by Merona that you can buy at Target. It’s thin and so stretchy that it won’t lose its shape if you need to pull it down for nursing. Adding a statement necklace will instantly dress up the look. This red velvet dress is probably the sexiest thing on this list (maybe I’ll buy it?). But the cutouts are still bra-friendly, and it’s stretchy, so it should be a cinch to pull it off to the side for nursing (though like the silver dress above, it may require a little less modesty or a coverup, so definitely try this dress on in the comfort of your home before taking it out into the wild). For something with a little more structure, this zip-front dress was one of the few that popped up in my search that didn’t scream club wear. And according to the one review from Nordstrom, the material quality and seaming details make this dress extra flattering. For a less expected color, I love this blush pink midi dress with kimono sleeves from Asos.
