Having newborn puppies in the house is truly an exciting time, and there will be many things you’ll want to know about them! Puppies are born both deaf and blind.  Nursing puppies spend their days eating, sleeping, squirming, and squeaking!Though they can not hear, they do make noises from the moment they are born.  Most of the time, they will sound like tiny kittens squeaking, but occasionally, you will hear them moaning, and sometimes crying.They can not crawl, but they “belly scoot” all over the place and cry when they get lost or separated from their littermates. When you watch them sleeping, you will notice that they “jerk” a lot of the time.  This is their muscles developing and is completely normal.They can not go to the bathroom on their own, and your Golden Retriever will lick them to stimulate their bodies to have urine and bowel movements.  Though this is crucial for their survival, they do not care much for it, and you will hear some puppies loudly crying, as if hurt when momma does this!

She is not hurting them, but generally if they are complaining about it, it is because she woke them from a sound sleep, and they are protesting being woke up! Newborn puppies will crawl away from each other to sleep if they get too hot, but they can not warm themselves up if they get chilled. A chilled pup is a dangerous situation, as they can and will die from being cold. Their basic needs are food and warmth.  Golden Retriever puppies generally weigh between 14 and 16 ozs. Puppies will gain weight daily, and all breeds of newborn pups double their birth weight within 10 to 14 days. Newborn puppies can be handled from birth, but if this upsets the momma, then try to keep it to a minimum for the first couple of days.  Puppies should feel solid when you hold them, and they only cry when they are hungry or cold, unless of course, momma is cleaning them!Experienced breeders can tell by looking at and holding a puppy, whether or not it is doing well and gaining weight properly.

However, it is still a good idea to weigh each pup daily.  In order to do this, you will first need to be able to distinguish who is who!You can buy various pieces of colored ribbon and loosely tie the ribbon around the pup’s neck and then keep a chart according to each ribbon color and sex of the puppy.  Be forewarned though, some mothers will not allow this, and will chew the ribbons off of the pup.  They are her puppies after all!Sometimes different colors of nail polish can be used on a pup’s foot to mark them, but again, some mothers will also lick this off, no matter how much it dried first.Another option of marking puppies is to carefully cut their fur in different ways and then chart which pup has which haircut. As for weighing the puppies, I use a digital postal scale.  These are great because they weigh accurately down to grams or hundredths of an ounce.These can be bought almost anywhere, including department stores or office supply stores.  You will want one that weighs at least up to 5 pounds, although 10 pounds would be better as you will also need this when you worm the puppies.
