Max JosephJersey never looked so good. #Max JosephSince I was old enough to remember my dad worked in the World Trade Center. For awhile he was on the 106th floor of the tower without the antenna and then moved to the 100th floor of the same building. I remember going to work with him many times and the way my ears would pop going up the super fast elevators. I also the remember the sound the wind would make during the day as it blew hard against the building's frame providing a low frequency rumble. In 1993, the first time ...it was bombed, I remember my mom calling me at school and telling me that dad was ok and not to worry. He had been on the 100th floor that day and felt the bomb go off, the building shake, etc. He first went to the roof where helicopters evacuated pregnant women and then descended the 107 flights of smoke-filled stairs in the pitch black holding hands in a massive daisy chain with all the other people who worked there. I remember him coming home that covered in soot with a big bottle of champagne and an even bigger smile.

Due to popular demand from the employees of the company, my dad's firm moved to a lower building in the World Trade Center complex. He was walking there on the crisp, fall morning of September 11, 2001 when he heard the first plane hit. I got a call from my mom, waking me up at college, telling me that a plane crashed into one of the towers and that dad was ok and to turn on the TV. I turned on CNN just in time to see the second plane hit. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I woke up my roommates and we all watched in horror, imagining the far-reaching implications of such an attack. But beyond all that I felt blessed and thankful that my dad survived as well as most of his colleagues. My sister-in-law Amy was also a first responder and ran into the collapsing towers to pull out those who had been buried. After an explosion she was blown back against a wall and suffered a concussion and some broken ribs. She survived thankfully, but not unscathed. 9/11 will always be personal for me.
