Your Email Has Been SentFOR OUR NEWSLETTERStar Wars fans are accusing retail giant Target of sexism this week, after a T-shirt being sold in the chain’s stores featured an image that was altered to replace Princess Leia with Luke Skywalker. The original image was taken during a scene in 1977’s Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, when former Jedi Knight and Sith Lord Darth Vader threatened rebel Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) for working with rebel spies. Watch the scene below: Franchise fans know the moment well, and were shocked last week upon seeing an image of the famed encounter revised to include Skywalker (Mark Hamill). The Mirror newspaper gathered an assortment of responses to Target on Twitter, from fans who accused the chain store of being motivated by sexism:

— Patrick Wood (@Pat_Wood) October 15, 2015 @Target is selling a #StarWars shirt where Leia is replaced by Luke. It's a "boy's shirt" now. — Jason (@G33KDad) October 15, 2015 @Target Why don't you put Leia back on that Star Wars t-shirt first? — Burlap Bean Tyrant (@favomancer) October 15, 2015 @Target you could not have made a more sexist tshirt #starwars. Removing Leia and replacing her with Luke? — Kim Vander Dussen (@wwfan7ana) October 17, 2015 @AskTarget You did not put Luke in Leia's place on a Star Wars scene on a "boys" t-shirt. How sexist can you be,Target? — KHub (@krishub) October 16, 2015 Target responded to the criticism from one Star Wars fan on Twitter Thursday Oct. 15, writing, “It’s never our intention to leave anyone out! We’ll share your thoughts with the right teams.” Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh film in the series, will debut in December. Early tickets for the film went on sale Monday.

Watch the trailer below:It’s been busy in the social media and gender politics sector this month. First, the viral video of a woman walking down the street being catcalled all day. Then, Lena Dunham’s Instagram Planned Parenthood T-shirt campaign.
Short Wedding Dress PetticoatThen, the Funny or Die parody of the woman walking down the street.
Portable A/C Units For BoatsComedian Elon James White started a mini-hashtag campaign, too, this weekend: #DudesGreetingDudes had some snarky steam through the better part of this week, which Digiday reports on here.

A girl snapped a picture of him, and because of his apparent cuteness, it went viral and he gained a bazillion followers within 24 hours and an interview with Ellen Degeneres. Except that it’s been speculated that the whole viral sensation mystery was really a ploy from a marketing company, Breakr. The CEO claims that they utilized “fangirls” to do it. Leonares said Breakr’s three-person team and their social media network then drummed up support for it in a Google Hangout full of small-time content creators and Twitter users who work with the company. He likened their effect on the hashtag to when One Direction’s millions of followers create trending topics. Leonares refused multiple times to name specific members of Breakr’s Twitter user network. Breakr’s Twitter account has only 1,200 followers but he said they’re strategic influencers. Does it matter if Alex’s Internet fame was authentic? Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that the same people who hate objectifying women are OK with spreading the meme of a teenage kid trying to bag groceries?

If you take it as a quick case study in how to market your brand before the holidays, you need to get Teen Twitter on board. If you take it as passing around the image of a “cute” teenager? I think we should think about that. And you'll never guess who it's about! Starved for 1989 teasers? Don’t worry — they’re just going to keep coming. The latest to surface is a clip from the song “Style,” featured in a Target commercial for the deluxe edition of the album. And yes, for all you conspiracy theorists out there, the name of the song is a likely reference to Swift’s ex-boyfriend Harry Styles. “You got the long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt,” she sings. “And I got that good girl faith and a tight little skirt/ And when we go crashing down, we come back every time/ Because we never go out of style.” Yep, that sounds like the One Direction crooner, alright. In her Rolling Stone profile, she says she should have just called the song “I’m Not Even Sorry.”
