San Diego's beach fire pits, or fire rings, almost became a thing of the past due to city budget cuts, but private donations were made in an effort to save them. While the number of beach fire pits has declined over the years, several San Diego beaches still have this enjoyable amenity. Beach Bonfire Rules Fire rings at San Diego beaches are available first-come, first-served. Fires are only permitted between 5 a.m. and midnight. Beach-goers may not burn rubbish -- only charcoal, wood and paper products may be used in the fire rings. Fires must be contained within the fire rings and flames cannot go higher than 12 inches above the top of the fire ring container. Beach-goers must extinguish fires before they leave.

Encinitas San Diego County's northern beachside community of Encinitas is home to Moonlight State Beach. It is within walking distance of downtown Encinitas and features a wide beachfront of about 225 feet from the shoreline to the inland picnic area. Bonfire pits are available for daily use until 10 p.m., as are the tennis and volleyball courts, the snack bar and equipment rentals for fishing, surfing, body boarding and swimming. Other amenities include year-round lifeguards, wheelchair access, a children's playground, picnic tables, showers and restrooms. La Jolla La Jolla Shores Beach sits between Torrey Pines State Beach to the north and Hermosa Beach to the south. It is about a mile long and features a backdrop of 300-foot-high clifftops. La Jolla Shores has fire pits, a grassy park area, year-round lifeguards, picnic tables, a playground, volleyball area, restrooms and showers. Its main parking lot fills quickly because it is a favored spot for novice surfers. The southern end of the beach offers surfing lessons, as well as guided diving, snorkeling and kayaking tours.

Dogs are not allowed on the beach, and the walkway leading to the beach is not wheelchair accessible. Mission Bay In the Mission Bay area, home of SeaWorld San Diego, several beaches provide fire pits and fire rings. Mission Bay Park is the largest beach area, with more than 25 miles of sprawling shoreline. Visitors can enjoy barbecuing, bonfires, picnicking, kite surfing, sport fishing or sailing. Crown Point Shores Park Beach offers a large, wide span of beachfront with picnic tables, barbecue grills, fire rings and an outdoor rinsing station right next to the shoreline. It offers spectacular views of downtown San Diego, SeaWorld, Vacation Isle and Fiesta Island. Crown Point Shores is wheelchair accessible and has a concrete pathway that connects the park to the beach. Sunset Point Park sits directly across from Vacation Isle and has a panoramic view of Mission Bay. This beachside park is lined with palm trees and has beachfront fire rings, picnic tables and a paved path for bike riding, walking, jogging and wheelchair access.

Situated in the heart of Mission Bay, Fiesta Island is a man-made island with miles of sandy beach area available for picnicking, camping, jogging and beachcombing. In all, there are 37 fire rings along the island's shoreline. It also has a leash-free dog area on the southwest side. Fiesta Island has no public restrooms and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Ocean Beach and Coronado In southern San Diego County, Ocean Beach's Dog Beach is another popular location that features several fire pits. Dogs can swim, dig and roam unleashed, as long as they are vaccinated and friendly. Lifeguards are on duty only in summer from 9 a.m. to dusk. Dog Beach is popular with San Diego's hippie community and it is not uncommon to see visitors carrying guitars as well as surfboards. Just across the San Diego Bay, the island peninsula of Coronado features a few beach areas with fire pits. Central Beach is the most frequented area, offering amenities including a snack bar, volleyball court, barbecue pits, showers and public restrooms.
