We are approved by the State of New Jersey Department of Health as an adoption agency. HCAL is working with the City of Bayonne to establish a humane, compassionate animal haven in that municipality. The City will be leasing HCAL a piece of property on East 5th Street, and once the environmental/legal issues have been resolved, HCAL will construct a pre-fabricated facility on the site. While we have been fundraising for this project for the past several years, when the lease agreement is signed with the City, the League will begin a major shelter capital campaign.While working towards establishing our shelter, HCAL strives to provide the following services:- Rescue/foster abandoned animals - Promote and subsidize spay/neuter services - Adopt animals into permanent loving homes - Provide information and referrals on responsible pet care - Trap/neuter/release feral cats - Assist with veterinary services for the indigent Our voice mail phone line (201 200-1008) receives calls daily regarding adoption

The phone lines are staffed by League members.The League has a low cost spay/neuter program that is accepted by veterinary clinics in Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City and North BergenHCAL is also a member of the Hudson County Animal Response Team (CART), working with representatives of the Red Cross and the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management on the establishment of a disaster plan for the county’s animals. All of our adoptable pets are in boarding facilities and foster homes. All potential adopters are required to fill out an adoption survey and agree to a home check prior to placing an animal in their home. Once approved for adoption, a pet will be placed with you for a two week trial period prior to the adoption being finalized.Adoption donations are required. All pets are up to date on their vaccinations and are spayed/neutered (if old enough). In the case of young kittens or puppies, a spay/neuter certificate will be provided at the time of adoption. Unfortunately, this is a kill shelter, but the goal is to not have to put any animal to sleep. Our goal is to love and nurture animals while they are with us.

Then we try to find them the perfect home.Many wonderful dogs and cats are at the shelter, waiting for a forever home. These animals can be seen during our adoption hours. Pets come and go, so please check back frequently! If you are no longer able to care for your pet properly, you can turn him/her into the shelter. Proof of residency is required for Union residents to surrender their pets. We ask that you please bring your pet's medical records and provide us with any information you can to assist us in attempting to place your pet in a good home. To help offset this cost, the adoption fee is $125 for cats and $175 for dogs. We highly recommend paying the extra fee to microchip (especially for dogs). We use People for Animals and this fee is $35, which includes the microchip and the first year registration fee.Once the application is received we will forward it through the appropriate approval process and you will be notified.
