The Ames Animal Shelter believes in an adoption approach that considers important details for finding the right fit, such as a person's home, interests and lifestyle. We then match those with an animal's social, exercise and training needs.Unlike some agencies “pass or fail” application procedures, we strive to match people and animals through education and discovery. We accomplish this through conversation to create an effective, pleasant adoption experience — and most important — to make lasting matches. Each situation, adopter and animal requires a different approach. And while we reserve the right to refuse an adoption, we always make every effort to work with you to address concerns or find the most appropriate homeless animal. Please plan on spending at least one hour for the adoption process — we’re confident that you’ll agree that this small investment of time will be well worth the countless hours of enjoyment that will result from finding “the perfect match.”

Requirements for AdoptionBefore falling in love with one of our animals, please make sure you are aware of the following:• Adopters must be at least 18 years old and present valid photo ID with proof of current address.• We encourage or may require all household members to meet the new pet prior to adoption.• If you have a dog and want to adopt another, please bring your current dog for a dog introduction.• Written landlord approval is required or proof of home ownership may be required.• While we always make every effort to work with you to address concerns or find the most appropriate companion animal, we do reserve the right to refuse an adoption. Visit the event below for details and to purchase your tickets!Such a wonderful piece of history. We had a great time there with friends. I would recommend seeing this. This is a unique experience to ride an original carousel. The tickets are only $1 each or 6 for $5 making it a budget-friendly family venue. The carousel animals are in very good condition and there are also bench seats for those who don't want to climb up onto a horse, pig etc. This antique carousel is only a couple miles off I-35. We were impressed with the quality of restoration, even having a Wurlitzer providing the music. My wife and I paid the buck for a ride. We laughed and smiled the entire ride. It went faster than we expected. Thirty minutes should be more than adequate for this stop. This is a fun antique mall, with a pretty good variety of dishes, books, toys, a bit of furniture, and knick-knacks. Usually something for everyone ... but plan on at least an hour our two to look around. We were on a road trip, driving down from Minnesota into Iowa, and decided to make a stop in Story City to stretch and see the antique carousel.

It was a lovely stop! It's about a 2-3 minute drive from the highway exit. A ride cost $1 each, and there was no line. We got right on! This historic attraction is a must see when traveling I-35. It's a step back in time for young and old. The price of the tickets are purposely low to give everyone a chance to experience a ride on a piece of history This is a must if you come to Story City! They have restored this with the calliope and it has horses, pigs, even a spinning tub! This carousel has been around since I was a child, I am now 59. All of the pieces have been redone. Nice for young children. It's located at a park where children can play. We were pleasantly surprised to find the carousel open, paid the $1.00 per person to ride, enjoyed a 2-3 minute whirl around with wonderful music playing and Our 8-month old puppy enjoyed the ride also. When we got off, we roamed around looking at old photos, purchased a bag of popcorn for $.50 and looked at the merchandize that was...
