It sounded like the rainforest living next to the home on Ocean Avenue in Bellmore. The family shared the house with more than 250 birds, many of them beautiful, most of them exotic, and all of them loud."It sounded like the Amazon," a neighbor said."You can't help but know. You walk by and hear the birds," said Jackie Cornman, a neighbor."This is the illegal one. That's an illegal Asian Water Monitor," an animal expert said. Birds were just the beginning. The owner had 151 reptiles, mostly turtles, like an alligator snapping turtle. He also had chinchilla's, prarie dogs, a skunk, and a few sugar gliders."We're going to be here for a long time today. It was animals living in filthy water, they didn't have proper food and water, and they were living without a healthy supply of healthy fresh air. It was very unsanitary in there," said Gary Rogers, SPCA Spokesman.Workers wore Tyvek suits and some had air filtration systems because the smell was so pungent."It's horrible for the animals. The animals couldn't have fared well, and you saw, the animals that are coming out, there's nine birds in a cage, that's cruelty and those animals are beautiful," Cornman said.

Rogers said it was the second time officers visited the location, after the homeowner was given the opportunity to clean up the house. But they found the conditions had deteriorated once again. The homeowner is expected to face charges.NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — State officials have filed a consumer complaint against the Just Pups pet stores and its owner. The state on Wednesday alleged the company and owner Vincent LoSacco misled customers about the health of puppies sold from its stores in East Brunswick, East Hanover, Emerson and Paramus. Officials also say the company refused to reimburse customers for puppies that died or required medical care and committed dozens of other consumer protection violations. “Vincent LoSacco’s alleged deceptive behavior caused his customers to suffer financially and emotionally as they sought expensive veterinary care for the sick puppies he sold them,”Acting Attorney General Porrino said in a statement Wednesday. “This kind of consumer fraud has a devastating effect on pet lovers and will not be tolerated in our state.”

The state says LoSacco advertised or otherwise represented that puppies were healthy and were up-to-date with vaccinations. But officials say the Emerson resident sold at least 55 puppies that were “sick or defective” and failed to provide refunds. The state is looking to permanently ban LoSacco from advertising or selling dogs in the state of New Jersey.

His Emerson store, which was charged with six health code violations, was closed last week when the town voted against issuing him a business license. Of the 30 puppies at the Emerson store, three will go to customers who bought them, 12 will go to animal rescue groups, and the remaining 13 will go to LoSacco’s last surviving Just Pups store in East Hanover – where currently, there is no ordinance making it illegal to sell puppy mill puppies. New Jersey legislators are still debating the Pet Purchase Protection Act, which would make puppy mill puppy sales illegal statewide. LoSacco will be in court on July 21 to face his animal cruelty charges. (TM and © Copyright 2016 CBS Radio Inc. and its relevant subsidiaries. McLaughlin, running in lane 6, was in second place behind 2012 Olympian T'erea Brown after nine hurdles, but she rallied off the 10th and final barrier to take the lead for good and then eased up as she crossed the line a few strides ahead of Brown, second in 55.70. Brown, the 2011 NCAA champion at the University of Miami, was 6th in the 400 hurdles at 2012 Olympic Games in London. McLaughlin's 55.23 was the second fastest of the semifinals. Only Dalilah Muhammad, who won the other semifinal in 54.14, ran faster than McLaughlin. Shamier Little of Texas A&M, the world leader this season and the only person to ever beat McLaughlin in the 400 hurdles, failed to make the final as she placed 5th in her heat in 55.64. Little, a 3-time NCAA 400 hurdle champion and the 2015 silver medalist at the World Championships, dealt McLaughlin her only 400 hurdles loss when Little was first and McLaughlin was second at the 2014 U.S. Junior National Championships. McLaughlin, just 14 at the time of that race, hasn't a lost to anyone at any distance since then.
