There are holes in the walls, blood on the sheets and even stains on the shower curtains.Elwood Sands smells like mould and cigarette butts and the paper thin walls can’t conceal the transgressions going on in the next room.It’s a haven for sex workers and drug addicts, people who actually stay there more than a couple of nights.So how do I know all this? I’ve actually slept there.I was a student who couldn’t afford a five-star room and had just travelled from a NSW country town to Melbourne for the first time.As my four friends and I stepped into the motel from hell, we immediately questioned our judgment.The owner must have been desperate to make a quick buck, because the five of us were crammed into the one room for just $40. It’s the only time I think I’ve ever felt dirtier after showering.

Elwood Sands may sound like a place with stunning ocean views, but instead you gaze out onto a carpark littered with clothes, broken wood and an overturned mattress.It has been rated horribly on Trip Advisor, people say sleeping on the street would be more luxurious.One guest stayed there out of desperation and booked a room last minute in February.“Honestly, sleeping on the street probably would have been the better option,” she said.“The room had a big sign on the door saying ‘no smoking’ but the stench of stale smoke hits you as would walk through the door.“The windows were broken and held together by odd blocks of wood. The shower did not work. There were damp patches on the carpet alongside burn marks from cigarettes.”Another man said his stay in February was scary, and it was a derelict crisis centre advertised as a motel.“The room was filthy, mould everywhere, the window was smashed and insecure, there was food rubbish under the bed, smoke alarm was covered in masking tape to allow previous occupants to smoke, a chair had a used stocking tied around it and no available parking spaces and also an unbearable smell,” he said.“

A woman was screaming outside my room.“The screaming woman had calmed down and approached me to use my phone and offered me some of her ‘puff’.“She told me she was on ‘crisis relief’ and was meant to have a room but was angry when someone else was using heroin in her bathroom which had blood in it.”In January a woman dubbed Elwood Sands as the most disgusting, putrid, dive of a place she had ever seen.In September last year a woman posted to Trip Advisor about how children out the front were being told to be careful of needles poking out of a bin out the front of the motel.There was another guest last year who had a really harrowing experience.“We woke up in the middle of the night because someone was trying to get into our room,” the guest said.“There were noises and music throughout the night. Clearly it’s filled with sex workers and druggies.”As the guest tried to escape the next morning, they were cornered by a “filthy old man” holding a small knife, asking where “Irene and Gary” were staying because they stole his phone.“
