Used Church Furniture For Sale In Chicago

When Dr. Christine Chakoian was interviewing about a decade ago for the senior pastor position at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Forest, she did so as the congregation was preparing for its annual spring rummage sale."I've never seen anything like this in my life," Chakoian remembered thinking. "It was overwhelming and almost terrifying to see the amount of clothing, household goods, jewelry, shoes, furniture and the number of volunteers. It was really breathtaking." First Presbyterian's 65th annual spring sale remains a major community event. The 2015 version is slated for Saturday, May 2, and a wide swath of people are expected to come to the church parking lot seeking an ever larger assortment of household goods, clothes, furniture, home décor, antiques, sports equipment and toys.According to organizers, the large crowd that comes from across the region has made the day an event, not just a rummage sale. "People will work their schedules around the first Saturday of May," said Maureen Olsen, one of the co-chairwomen.
"They know this is the opportunity for them to have a great find and also make a difference in someone else's life."The selection is so large that it requires about 400 volunteers to help sort, prepare and arrange the goods. Volunteers include church members, but also students and staff from Lake Forest College, area boy scouts and other community members. While many of the items are priced for shoppers looking to save some money, there also are big name brands and high-end goods."Dogs For Sale That Look Like BooWe try to be Main Street and Michigan Avenue," said Cynthia Hessemer, the other co-chairwoman.String Lights For Construction Sites That diversity is a highlight in and of itself, according to Chakoian."Arsenal BlindsIn this day and age when we are so divided by geometry, economics, color or belief this is one of those unique places that bring together all kinds of people in one place at such a joyous time," she said.
"It is a lot of work but it is almost like a party."Saturday's sale culminates a year-long organizational process as the church takes in donations all year for both its spring and fall sales. The money raised benefits a number of charities. Any items that are not sold are donated to other organizations that can use the material."It is a great recycling program because we have goods that are donated in and then we get the goods donated back into the community so that they can be re-used and we get goods to people who need them and also to people that enjoy a great sale," Hessemer added. The sale will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 700 N. A corner lot is a nice perk when you live an urban area like Chicago, but this Windy City property's history trumps its coveted proximity: It used to be an impressive church. The converted sanctuary maintains many of its finer original details, like windows, cathedral ceilings (literally), and an organ loft that's now a cozy library. But the new-fashioned decor doesn't rely on pews or pulpits to make a statement.Instead, the congregation-sized space becomes an airy open floor plan with an urban tilt. A floor-to-ceiling green backsplash defines the kitchen, and brick and steel accents offer industrial flavor. Upstairs, skylights diffuse the master bedroom and bath with a natural glow — and offer a peek toward the heavens. If this home's spirit moves you, it's currently on the market for $849,000.
