AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC FESTIVALWild PedderVilla Rochford Video: Coroner rules on baby pram death
Zac Rainbow died after becoming trapped between the side of his pram and its mattress. The death of a Hobart baby boy who suffocated in a pram has led a Coroner to call for tighter regulations on the sale of second hand nursery furniture.Zac Cameron Rainbow was 11 months old when he died in 2007 at his grandmother's Geilston Bay home.He had been left sleeping in a second hand pram bought online and which did not meet Australian safety standards. The baby suffocated when he became trapped between the side of the pram and its mattress.Coroner, Glenn Hay, has recommended only accredited and licensed dealers be allowed to sell used nursery furniture. He also wants a ban on the import of second hand equipment which does not meet Australian safety standards, including online purchases.Jenny Branch of Kidsafe Tasmania says the organisation has long-held concerns about such purchases."If you know the history of the piece of equipment that you're using we're quite comfortable with that but anything that you buy from a second hand store, off eBay, you're not sure of the history and that's where we think the complications come into play," she said.
