But finding a willing buyer with a big truck in New York City isn’t easy. And selling items on a website like Craigslist can mean letting strangers into your home to check out the merchandise. Kalam Dennis and Reham Fagiri are hoping to give budget-conscious New Yorkers a better option with New York City-based startup AptDeco, which connects wannabe buyers and sellers of “preowned” home furnishings. In recent years, online clothing resale stores have been trying to loosen the lock sites like eBay and Craigslist have had on selling used threads.

Now, it may be furniture’s turn. San Francisco-based Chairish and New York-based Viyet, online furniture consignment shops that focus on high-end and designer home furnishings, both debuted early last year. AptDeco, meanwhile, targets the “everyday New Yorker,” Fagiri said. The site often features brands like West Elm, Crate & Barrel and Design Within Reach. The duo came up with the idea when Fagiri was moving back to New York City after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton business school. Dennis was trying to sell a couch at the same time, so he borrowed the U-Haul truck Fagiri had rented for her move so he could offer buyers delivery. That made responses to his couch offer “dramatically different,” he said. “I only had that truck for an eight-hour period, but I had like six people who said, ‘I'll take it.’” With that in mind, AptDeco partnered with moving companies so that buyers can easily opt for delivery within the five boroughs for $65.

Selected items move for a $20 fee. Tack on $10 per floor for walkups above the fourth floor. At pickup, AptDeco’s movers check the item’s condition against the sellers’ description, which the company says adds an added level of comfort. Sellers can also request that an AptDeco employee come to their home and verify the item ahead of time, allowing them to add a special designation to their ad. Payments go through AptDeco, which takes a cut of between 14% and 19%, depending on the purchase price. Dennis and Fagiri launched the company with $70,000 from their own bank accounts. They also snagged $100,000 after taking part in prestigious tech startup accelerator Y Combinator. AptDeco, which has two full-time employees, is set to move into Midtown office space next month. Since January, the website has gone from about 20 transactions per month to about 450, Dennis said. The founders say they’re working on adding a clearance section to the site. Sellers will be able to allow the service to automatically mark down their item within a certain timeframe.
