Since 2012, Nike’s Roshe line has been a favorite by both the casual sneakerhead and the hardcore, but has the countless number of releases and new silhouettes that have dropped since passed them by?

The Nike Roshe One is about to be celebrate 4 years since its debut back in 2012. There is no doubt that this sneaker has been one of the most successful and relevant releases that Nike has come out with in the last decade. I can only imagine the amount of units Nike has been able to push. As soon as the Roshe hype caught fire, there was nothing that could stop it. I still remember when I saw the Roshe One – when it still called Roshe Run – for the first time. It seemed a bit “different” to me. The midsole appeared to be to plain and sort of generic, while the all-mesh looked kind of cheap and flimsy. Most of us have been used to seeing uppers with some sort of structure or build to them, but the Roshe is basically a sock-like upper glued on to a sole unit. I was very iffy the minute I saw the shoe, but then, I put the shoe on. I had no words to explain what my feet and I were feeling. Up until that point, the Roshe was the most comfortable thing that I have ever put on my feet!

Before I put on a pair of the Roshes, I was used to wearing heavier and less comfortable sneakers such as Jordan retros and heavier sneakers with chunky midsoles and bulkier uppers. Putting on a pair of the Roshes for the very first time felt like I experienced some type of revelation that seriously made me contemplate getting rid all of my current sneakers, and starting a new set of footwear that consisted strictly of the Roshes. I fell in love with the shoe. I was going to go out and get a bunch of different colorways so I can have plenty of options to wear with all the clothing I own. The Roshe is such a simple and subtle sneaker, yet Nike managed to make it a worldwide phenomenon, and it did so very effortlessly. Throughout the next 4 years, there were a couple stumbling blocks that hindered the continued success of the almighty Roshe Onw. One was completely avoidable, while the second one was completely unavoidable. The Roshe hype in 2016 will only retain a fraction of what it was in years past, here’s why.

Number 1: The Roshe Went Too Hard, Too Fast You know the saying, “You can never have enough of a good thing”? Well, that phrase does not apply to the Nike Roshe One. The Roshe Run made its debut with 7 different colorways that are now considered the OG colorways. There was a little bit for everyone, regardless of what your taste was. It was cool because if you truly wanted to you could have picked up all seven pairs without having to create a huge dent in your wallet since each pair retailed for only $70. Shortly after that, new colorways began pop up, and that was cool too. Then we began to see the shoe utilize different color blocking. Soon thereafter we began getting the FB models, and Roshes with prints such as tiger camo on them. New materials began to surface such as suede, JCRD, nylon, etc., while Flywire, tye-dye and safari print all got their time to shine on the Roshe Run. Slip-ons, midtops and woven uppers soon began to make an appearance. Next thing you know, there’s and endless amount of options to choose from, and the Roshe no longer had that exclusiveness that it once had.

Did I mention that Nike made it available on NIKEid and also gave you the option to buy Roshes with Flyknit construction? Anything and everything was done on the shoe. Ironically, the Roshe was no longer highly coveted and people have begun to lose interest. It’s human nature for people to want what they can’t have, And everyone had the Roshe Run. Which meant that nobody really wanted it anymore. Take a trip to your local mall and you’re bound to see dozens of Roshes sitting on shelves, on sale, begging for someone to buy them. Nike should have taken a bit slower and gradually introduce new models, colorways, sole units, patterns, prints and technology on to the shoe. But like every business, they saw opportunity to make a profit on a highly coveted shoe and they went all in. I don’t blame them. I just think that the Roshe would have had a longer (relevant) lifespan if they had slowed down a bit. Number 2: The competition got more fierce and the Nike roshe run was no longer the most COMFORTABLE shoe on the market.

It was bound to happen. Brands (even Nike) started coming out with sneakers that were far more superior in quality and comfort. All these features that have now stepped into the spotlight, began getting a lot more attention. Granted, the shoes cost a bit more than the Roshe Run, but many of us felt that that was only a small price to pay for a shoe that will be a lot more comfortable, durable and “refreshing”. Everyone has a pair of Roshes, and now people felt it was time to look for the next hot sneaker. The Roshe is no longer what it used to be. There is no doubt that the Roshe Run it will always have it’s loyal supporters and it had an amazing run, but when it comes to being relevant in the sneaker world, there is now a lot more options out there that are far better than the Roshe. The year 2016 is bound to be a great year for sneakers. I see a lot of potential from numerous brands, but I just can’t fathom the idea that the Nike Roshe will be one of the sneakers making waves in 2016.
