Where To Buy A Street Cat Named Bob

We probably all know someone who believes that one little cat couldn’t possibly make a difference in a person’s life. “It’s just a cat,” they’d say. “Cats don’t save lives or help people change for the better,” they’d say. A Londoner named James Bowen and his beloved cat, Bob, would vehemently disagree. So too would anyone who has read Bowen’s incredibly touching memoir, A Street Cat Named Bob: And How He Saved My Life. This bestselling book is, without question, one of the most moving accounts of a human/animal friendship that I’ve ever read. I first learned of James and Bob a few years ago, when their uplifting story surfaced on social media and practically lit Facebook on fire. The feel-good, rags-to-riches tale soon captured the attention (and hearts) of millions of cat lovers worldwide. I followed their Facebook page and saw updates regularly, but for some inexplicable reason I never did pick up the book, even though I knew I would love it. I’ve just come up for air after a two day reading binge (I literally couldn’t put it down, it was that good) and am utterly in love with James and his extraordinary cat, Bob.

James was a London street musician and recovering drug addict when he first came across a stray ginger cat who was clearly in need of rescuing. Though James was living hand-to-mouth and struggling in life, he took the cat in and spent what little money he had to get the cat the medical attention he needed. James named the cat Bob after a character from the quirky television drama, Twin Peaks. It quickly became obvious to James that Bob was no ordinary cat. Bob seemed completely at home on the streets, and unlike many felines, he was unfazed by such things like traffic, strangers and being in unfamiliar locations. James walked Bob on a leash down busy streets, and when the duo rode the bus to James’s “street job,” Bob pressed his nose to the glass and watched the world go by. What strikes me about this story is that, had Bob been a cat who just wanted to curl up inside and sleep the day away, the ending may have been a bit different. But because this outgoing cat was willing to stay by his human friend’s side no matter where he went, he helped James earn a better living.

James recounts how, prior to Bob, he’d felt largely invisible while busking on the street. He was barely able to scrape by. The affable cat was a magnet for tourists and locals alike, which helped James earn more money, initially from playing his guitar and later, from selling the Big Issue magazine. Their story reminds me of a scene at the end of the Julia Roberts movie, Pretty Woman. Richard Gere’s character says “So what happens after he climbs up and rescues her?” And Julia’s character replies “She rescues him right back.” It’s evident that this is what happened to James and Bob too. James rescued Bob all right, but Bob rescued James right back. There’s a great quote from James on Wikipedia: “He is what I wake up for every day now… he’s definitely given me the right direction to live my life.” Bob gave James a reason to live and the courage to fight hard to better his life. Because of Bob’s love, friendship, loyalty and support, James found the inner strength he’d always had but which had eluded him.

First published in Great Britain, A Street Cat Named Bob was an instant hit there and soon became an international sensation.
