You want to generate money quickly, so here’s the $64,000 question: What should you sell? The answer will affect whether you make a profit on your valuables. And, given the economy’s slow resurgence, every dollar counts. Using valuables or collectibles as a financial safety net is possible, with a few guidelines. The first thing to consider is the fact that resale prices are low now because of the high volume of treasures available. Unfortunately, many people are selling their treasures for very little just to pay their bills. Antiques, art, collectible stamps, comics and limited-edition prints and books all are being unloaded for almost half of the value they had a few years ago. So if you can wait to sell, you might make more money in the long run. In general, the holidays are the best time to sell collectibles. If, however, you need money quickly, here is one way to generate it: • Start by combing through your belongings to determine what you can part with.

That means going to every room and looking in every closet and dresser for anything that can put cash in your pocket. Old computers, baby toys, DVDs, electric tools and furniture you are not using all are great items to sell. • ) ) for CDs or DVDs; • ) ), you may get more money, but it also could take more time for the item to sell. Used furniture, computers, lawn furniture and gardening tools are better sold locally. And consider that big, bulky items sold out-of-state may be difficult to ship. • If you have a lot of great stuff and the weather is right, you might consider having a garage sale to generate quick cash. Saturdays are generally best for this. Some people, like Rick Groom of Denver, may opt to take their treasures to a pawnshop. But Groom thought better of it after his visit to one. “I quickly realized pawnshops will give only a fraction of what you can get on Craigslist or eBay,” says Groom, who hoped to sell some signed sports memorabilia.

“It is worth the wait to get the extra money.” If you do choose to use an online auction site like eBay, take multiple digital photos of the sale item including the packaging. If the item is collectible, take photos of any signatures, watermarks or seals. Then write a very detailed description of the item including information about the original packaging, serial numbers, maker or country of origin. The more information you can provide, the more money people will pay. Check the “completed items” section of eBay to see the last selling price of similar goods. Make sure to be fair when setting the price of shipping. If you overcharge on shipping, you run the risk of losing a potential buyer. Have any gold or silver? The good news here is that prices for gold and silver are at all-time highs. But you definitely need to be knowledgeable about the type of silver or gold you own. One way to do this is by looking on the clasp or underside of the item. If it is gold, it will be stamped: 10k, 14k or 18k.

If the item is silver, the stamp will read 925. With gold, the lower the karat (k) number, the lower the level of gold in the item. If you have a coin, do an Internet search to determine the purity of the coin. Consignor receives 45% of the items selling price during the consignment contract period. Unlike many other consignment stores, Design Repeats does not add a Buyer’s Fee or Handling Fee on consigned items. Any item not sold and left unclaimed after the expiration of the contract, or earlier termination, shall be disposed of by Design Repeats with no further liability, financial or otherwise, to Consignor.

Consignor checks are mailed on or about the 20th day of the month following the month the item sold. The consignment contract is ninety (90) days. However, Design Repeats reserves the right to terminate the contract at any time and require the Consignor to pick up an item within seven (7) days of the request. Any item not sold and left unclaimed after the expiration of the contract, or earlier termination, shall be disposed of by Design Repeats with no further liability, financial or otherwise, to Consignor and without further notice by Design Repeats. It is the Consignors responsibility to keep track of the contract termination date.
