Occupying a bank of the Tallapoosa River, Wadley, with a population of around 750 according to the U.S. Census, has seen its largest employer add 50 jobs over the last year, with another 50 slated for 2016.

This comes thanks to a $250 billion initiative by Walmart to support American manufacturers over 10 years. Ken Harbaugh, CEO of Southern Sales and Marketing Group, explained the effect of Walmart on Wadley's Meadowcraft plant. "In reality, a plant like ours needs something like this," Harbaugh said. Harbaugh's group, Wadley Holdings, purchased the town's Meadowcraft plant out of bankruptcy in 2009. The plant, opened in 1963, manufactures patio furniture and had an extensive history with the town. "When a plant like that closes down, it devastates that town," Harbaugh said. "Ancillary businesses, like restaurants, basically don't survive." Over the past seven years, the plant has been expanded, acquiring business from big box retailers, cooperatives and chain stores for brands of wrought iron outdoor furniture, including Arlington House. The plant now occupies 55 acres with 1 million square feet and 195 welding machines on 55 acres. Harbaugh said the plant was able to restart in large part due to support from state, county and local officials, including training, tax benefits and continued support.

The Arkansas retail chain in 2013 announced its U.S. Manufacturing Commitment to buy an additional $250 billion in U.S.-made products over the next decade. Cindy Marsiglio, vice president of U.S. Manufacturing with Walmart, said the company identified certain products, such as patio furniture, with U.S. manufacturers ready to produce. "We did things differently on our end, and they came to us with an opportunity," she said. "It makes sense as a great business decision from our end for several reasons. U.S companies mean a shorter supply chain, quicker response to needs and it benefits the U.S. economy." Harbaugh said Walmart's commitment came at just the right time for his company. "We didn't know if it was true when we heard about it, or how much they were committed to it," he said. "But based on our dealings over the last three years, they are very serious, because they've supported us on an ongoing basis. That's allowed us to invest more heavily, hire more people.
