What gauge wire to use? Use tin plated stranded copper wire with insulation rated for gas and oil. Make sure the insulation has a hard jacket. Since I don't worry about cost, I buy a spool of 14AWG white insulate wire and the color code the terminals. I use Panduit rig lugs and crimp/solder the wire to lug connections and then coat the connection several times with liquid tape. You can get liquid tape in red, black, white and other wild colors. IMHO Panduit makes the best ring lugs. I will use no other brand. They have heavy copper ring lugs that that fit battery posts.

I buy them by the box. Most batterys have a positive terminal that is a larger diameter. I make the ring lug on the harness match the battery post size to mistake proof the connections. I also paint the battery in the area of the post with liquid tape with the same color on the harness. It makes it safe and easy to connect. Just match the colors. Red ring lug goes to red battery post.
