The retailer, which has a total of 76 furniture and mattress stores, plans to open a roughly 50,000-square-foot store in Orland Park on July 13. Other locations scheduled to open by mid-October include Logan Square and Ford City in Chicago, and in Batavia and Bolingbrook, where the company also is planning a 183,000-square-foot distribution center. A sixth retail location is planned in Merrillville-Hobart in northwest Indiana, according to company officials. The expansion is to be announced Friday morning at one of Art Van Furniture's planned new locations on Elston Avenue in Logan Square by Gov. Pat Quinn and Art Van officials, including founder and Chairman Art Van Elsander. The company, based in Warren, Mich., sells mattresses and outdoor furniture in addition to its mostly private-label assortment of furniture. It will invest more than $40 million in land, store build-out, inventory and labor in the Chicago area, according to CEO Kim Yost."For the last several years we have been getting requests to come to Chicago," he said, noting that the company has Illinois customers who shop at the store and request furniture delivery from nearby states.

Yost added that Art Van has reached its growth potential in Michigan and was ready to look at nearby markets. The company has a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Warren, Mich., that has the capacity to supply a 250-mile radius and Yost plans to expand around it, he said. "Our chairman made it clear to the leadership team that we needed to continue to build and grow the brand."Art Van also has plans to open a 90,000-square-foot store in Toledo, Ohio, where it also has a strong customer base, Yost said.Art Van bills itself as the Midwest's leading furniture and mattress retailer, employing 2,700 across two states. In addition to locations in Michigan, the company owns eight mattress stores, known as Art Van PureSleep stores, in Indianapolis. Yost said Art Van does not publicly release its revenues but cited a ranking by Furniture Today magazine that characterized the company as doing $500 million or more in annual business. The Chicago market for furniture and mattresses was ready for new blood, according to Yost.

Over the next few years, Art Van hopes to capture at least 10 percent of the market, he said. The state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is providing a $404,000 investment package based on the company creating 35 jobs and making a $4.9 million investment at its Bolingbrook distribution facility, according to state officials. The company will not be eligible for the incentive package unless it fulfills its jobs commitment, a state spokeswoman said.It was Chicago's lucrative furniture market, not the financial incentive package, that encouraged Art Van to expand here, Yost said. The company, which plans to fill commission-based sales positions, in addition to receiving, housekeeping, customer service and visual merchandising jobs, will hold a local job fair April 30 and May 1."We are pleased that Art Van Furniture has joined the growing number of companies that are choosing Illinois to invest and grow their business," Quinn said in a statement. "With our diverse economy and our pool of highly skilled workers, Illinois has what it takes for businesses to flourish."
