Vanilla Ice bogusly claimed for months to be the owner of the Florida pad where he was pinched for burglary Wednesday, but the scheme's roof collapsed on his once-pompadoured head after cops got involved, police said. The one-hit wonder faces burglary and grand theft charges for allegedly plundering more than $6,500 worth of furniture, artwork, mirrors, bicycles and pool equipment from an abandoned $2.5 million home in Lantana, Fla.
Incredibly, the looted digs sat steps away from a house the rapper-turned-remodeling maven was renovating for his DIY Network reality show, "The Vanilla Ice Project." The crew's trucks were still parked in the driveway Wednesday when Ice surrendered. Leaving jail Wednesday night, the 47-year-old called the flap "a misunderstanding" that was "blown out of proportion." "It'll all get cleared up, you'll see," said Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle. But police documents obtained by the Daily News on Thursday showed Ice may have been running a monthslong scam claiming ownership of the foreclosed pad — and even ordered unwitting cronies to snatch items from it. The alleged scheme evaporated faster than "Ninja Rap" fell from the pop charts after an unknown source dimed him out earlier this month, according to the documents. The pop star and reality host is seen handcuffed and covering his face in the back of a police car on his way to Palm Beach County Jail on Wednesday night.
Cops in Lantana, an unincorporated town south of Palm Beach, said they got the first whiff of the alleged caper Dec. 26 after someone called to report squatters at 109. During the investigation, Ice showed up and claimed he'd bought the place nine days before, police said. The next day, though, cops learned the property was bank-owned, and a local realtor, James Lovely, was representing the estate of its late owner, Morgan James Wilbur III, police said. Lovely wasn't immediately available for comment. The Palm Beach County Jail booking photo of Vanilla Ice, real name Robert Van Winkle. On Jan. 24, Lovely reported the place had been looted for thousands of dollars' worth of valuables, including a $1,000 sofa, twelve patio chairs, three bar stools, an iron table and glass top, two bicycles, some artwork, and a $3,000 pool heater, cops said. The realtor made another call Feb. 8, saying the house had been hit again, this time for a mirrored coffee table and some glass knick-knacks.
Cops zeroed on the "Ice Ice Baby" rapper after a confidential source told them to search a Lake Worth pad owned by his company, Van Rap Ltd. Detectives executed a search warrant at the house on Hunting Trail and recovered several of the hot items, including the sofa, the patio furniture, some mirrors and the pool heater. Cops said Vanilla Ice, foreground, allegedly stole furniture and a pool heater from the house, which is near one he is remodeling for his show. Cops later interviewed Ice's construction foreman, who said Ice told him he'd bought the property and ordered him to fetch stuff from it, including the pool heater and two bikes, worth about $400. Meanwhile, in a sworn statement, Ice told cops he found most of the loot on the curb outside the house and figured they were trash. He also copped to telling pals he owned the house, saying that he'd intended to buy it sometime in the future. He was booked on felony charges of burglary and grand theft and released from Palm Beach County jail after posting $6,000 bond.
One of Vanilla Ice's trucks is spotted in the neighborhood of the burglarized home Wednesday. One local said the bust dumfounded neighbors on the quiet street, where many of the homes are owned by north-dwelling snowbirds. “I just fine it very odd. Somebody like that — who goes to a house to steal a pool heater?" Marianna Tamayo, who lives across the street, told The News. "It doesn’t make sense to me.” Tamayo, who moved in with her husband in July, said her neighbors were initially excited about Ice and Co.'s renovation project because it could up the value of their homes. “I find it very ridiculous. I don’t think he needs the money," she said of the robbery. In a terse statement, the DIY Network said it was "looking into the matter" involving its bad-boy house flipper. Despite the drama, Ice's rep said he still planned to make a scheduled appearance at a home and garden show in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday. "Rob will be available to make the home show in Columbus," the rep, Tommy Quon, told The Columbus Dispatch.
