By Get Wedding Dress Sims 3Two Door Cinema ClubFull Length Heated Mirror This Northern Ireland trio mixes electronic polish and guitar-driven hooks. It was a hot day in the desert during Coachella’s first weekend, where we managed to sneak in an interview with Irish indie rockers Two Door Cinema Club. During our chat, bassist Kevin Baird picked up a squirt bottle and began spraying frontman Alex Trimble and lead guitarist Sam Halliday.
There was a bit of a water fight, but my recorder managed to survive. Later Saturday evening, Two Door rocked Coachella’s outdoor stage, where they may or may not have performed for Clint Eastwood. Let's get the deets. The coolest thing you’ve seen at Coachella so far? Kevin: I saw a bug golf kart driving people around. Sam: One of our friends saw Clint Eastwood. Kevin: Let’s just say we saw Clint Eastwood! Sam: He was wearing a Two Door T-shirt. Any new music in the works? We have something very exciting. Sam: We’re not at liberty to divulge that information yet, but we have something post-album number two, which we’re very excited about -- and it’s not necessarily something that we made all on our own. We may have worked with someone else, who we are also very excited about, and that may see the light of day after the summer. Have you started working on a new album at all? Sam: Everyone knows we have a hectic schedule, but I don’t think anyone really understands.
Ninety percent of our time is traveling and touring and playing shows and doing interviews, and when you do get those couple of days in between, you don’t really want to do anything. You want to see people and sleep. That’s kind of what we prepared ourselves for. Once the last album was ready, we figured we were going to go do this for a year and then make some new music. That’s why I got into this in the first place, was to make music, so it is difficult to always have to be able to always time all of your resources to be able to write new music. Alex: It’s definitely a lot of fun, too, traveling. We do get inspired from that. We were just in South America last week, and we’ve been to everywhere down there but Brazil, so getting to go and experience places like that comes from being busy all the time, and it was just nice to experience something new and get something new to write about. Kevin: I think it’s really scary, as well, how quickly things move. People ask about a new record, and we’re like, “The last record came out… oh wait, that was last September.”
I think because we toured the first album for like two-and-a-half years, it kept on getting bigger and bigger and bigger very slowly, and we didn’t feel like we could leave it at that point until we finally left it. It almost feels like we’re only kind of beginning on this album again. Are you touring the rest of the year? We’re going to take a break after this summer, mostly just to focus on ourselves as individuals a little bit. We’ve been touring, writing, living, recording together for the past six years, close to seven years, and from that we haven’t had a break for more than two weeks at a time. We made the decision that after the festival season is over, we are going to take a full month off and are going to do our own thing. I’m relocating to the States, Sam’s getting married, Kev is also doing stuff. We need a break. After that month, we’re going to get back on it and tour right up until the end of the year. Kevin: I’m going to go on holiday while he’s [Sam] on honeymoon.
Kevin: Don’t say it too loud. You don’t want fans crowding your honeymoon! Sam: There are like 2,000 islands. Do you have really crazy fans? Alex: In South America, fans would work out what hotel we were staying at, and they would wait outside the hotel day and night for us, leaving and coming back. They would find out our flight times at the airport and see us before we took off. They’d be there when we landed. Kevin: They’d find out what room numbers we were in and they would call. Do you have codenames that you check in under? Alex: We do now. What are some of the past names that you don’t use anymore? Do you all live in different places now? How does that work out? Sam: Sam is going to be in London. Kevin splits his time between LA and London, and I’ll be in Portland, and I think the nice thing will be that we will have three separate bases, where we can jump around and change the scenery and work in different environments.
I think that will add a lot to whatever the next record becomes. Do you ever get to do anything fun while on the road? I saw you were in South Africa recently… Kevin: We took a nice little day trip to the Cape of Good Hope. Sam: We saw some penguins. They have some penguins there. Kevin: If we have time, we’ll try to do a nice activity. Sometimes, you just need a day in your hotel room, lights off, in your pants doing nothing but watching 'Sopranos.' We don’t do a lot of tourist sights, but we have been to a lot of cool bars. Realistically, that’s what you get to do because you spend all day doing interviews and soundcheck, and you do the show, and then you have a couple of hours off. That way you don’t see all the touristy things that everyone sees, but you kind of meet a few people, and you get a vibe. Sam: I tried the tourist thing in Brazil on Good Friday. It was a horrible idea. I tried to go up to the top of the Sugar Loaf mountain on the cable car.
