Round Mirrors For Above FireplaceWith new ground rules established, the action began in late July 2015 after joining TOPS. Funny Toilet Paper DrawingsHigh-carb foods and sugary snacks were exchanged for lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole fruits and vegetables. Daily food calories were recorded using a cell phone app. Exercise, in the form of walking at least 30 minutes per day, was mandatory. Weight management is not a straight-line process—picture walking sideways across several up and down escalators.
Your daily choices determine which one you ride the longest. My doctor visit had not gone well. His lecture on my weight was discouraging. This was the right time for me to lose. I went to the computer, looked up the TOPS meeting time and told my wife to hold dinner—the meeting started in 15 minutes. Increased activity through walking was instrumental in my weight-loss journey, and I grew to love it. A grandson had a soccer game and grandpa walked the 3 miles one way to watch it. Exercise came first, but changes needed to be made in diet, as well. Food labels were studied. I ate all wholesome foods and packed my own lunch. This was a lifestyle change, not a one-time cruise. My weight loss has made my life more positive. As I looked back at reunion pictures, I could see I was getting bigger every year. I didn’t like what was happening, so my wife and I decided to do something about it. I started attending TOPS meetings, used the MyPlate program and got more active with exercise.
I started to lose weight. My wife was pleased with my progress, and I promised her that this time I was going to stay with it and finally get the pounds off. On October 9, 2014, she passed away … but I was determined to keep going. That was my turning point. It takes a plan to make it work, and with a lot of support and encouragement, you can achieve your goal—one day at a time. I decided it was time to get serious about my weight and get my blood pressure under control. I changed my way of eating, but I do not call it a diet. I call it a new way of eating—portion control. My health is best when I am not carrying any extra weight, including water weight. I am now back to the weight I was at my high school graduation. My pant size went from a 42-inch waist to a 34-inch waist, and my shirt size went from XXL to medium. I have also started exercising to build up my strength. TOPS has been a great support group and has helped me take off pounds sensibly. My weight was up again.
I could hardly walk, my knees hurt, I had problems with my arms, I could not fit into the tables at work and my health was starting to fail. My wife and I decided we needed to get back to TOPS and stay this time. They welcomed us with open arms. I watched my portions, managed my stress, quit eating as often at fast food restaurants and started a walking program. With the support of my wife and chapter members, and with the changes I’ve made, I’m down over 100 pounds. I became an Area Captain so I can help others as they have helped me. Accept help and support from your family and friends, and above all, never give up. Three years ago, I got serious about my weight-loss journey. I wanted to be able to get down and play with my granddaughter, Hannah, so I set five goals for myself: The first goal was joining TOPS VA 0302 Culpeper. In 2014, I made the second goal on my journey—I had gastric bypass surgery. It has been a life-changing ordeal for me. After that, it took me a total of nine months to lose my first 100 pounds.
This was my third goal. I made the fourth goal (after losing) a second 100 pounds. On November 10, 2015, I made the fifth goal and hit my goal weight. I’ve lost more weight than I now weigh. I never thought I’d see that day or even be at IRD as a Division Winner.TOPS New Brunswick King On December 14, 2014, I had a heart attack and drove myself to the hospital. It was the scariest day of my life. I was told I had to quit smoking, lose weight and be more active. I knew this would be a real challenge. I joined TOPS and received a warm welcome. I counted calories, walked 3½ miles every day and tried not to eat at night. Every week, all the members were anxious to find out how much I had lost. After 23 weeks without a gain, I reached my goal and became a KOPS. Just never give up! I came to TOPS because of my wife. I watched as she steadily lost weight and had fun doing it. I had lost weight and put it back on. I was tired of feeling tired, so I started walking outside. I started with 2 miles and worked my way up.
I can now jog for 3 miles—something I have not been able to do for 30 years. The most important thing to do is to keep a food journal. My mantra is, “If you bite it, write it.” Remember: We’re not on a diet! We have changed our habits and attitudes. It’s eat to live, not live to eat. We do not fail unless we quit. You can always start over. Don’t wait until tomorrow. Take a couple of deep breaths and start anew. Remember: You CAN do this. My success story goes hand in hand with my wife’s success story. She needed to lose 30 to 40 pounds to have a successful knee surgery. I knew her best chance to lose that much weight in six months was to lose with her. I watched what I ate and became more active. As my weight decreased, my stamina increased. By year’s end I lost nearly 30 pounds, won three 5K races in my age group, and more importantly, my wife was fit enough to receive her new knee. Because we lost together, we would encourage, challenge and laugh with each other, and hold the other accountable.
We worked as a team, and as a team, we could take off pounds sensibly. I joined TOPS when I was 8 years old and began to lose consistently, but my problem did not go away. I still liked to eat. When I stopped attending meetings, I began to gain. This pattern of eating brought me to a weight of over 450 pounds and endangered my health. I returned to TOPS. With the help and encouragement of my new TOPS friends, I was able to get back into a routine of recording my food intake, counting calories, and doing lap swimming and other exercises. It’s hard, and I still struggle, but I am determined to continue these practices to the best of my ability until I reach my goal. I know that my life depends on this. I’ve always been a big person. My parents always said that I never ate differently—I was just “husky.” Over the years I’ve tried every diet out there. It works well for a while, but if you get really hungry it’s all over. When I decided on weight-loss surgery, my doctor recommended I get into some type of support group.
